Delhi: Even after losing battle of life, 18-month-old girl gives new lease of life to 2 people by donating liver-kidney
Eighteen-month-old Mahira, a resident of Mewat district of Haryana, may have lost her battle for life, but became immortal by donating her organs. The girl who was brain dead due to falling from the balcony gave a new lease of life to 2 people after her death. With this, Mahira became the third child in Delhi-NCR and the second youngest child to donate an organ. The girl’s parents are being appreciated everywhere for this decision.
On November 6, Mahira fell from the balcony of her house in Mewat, Nuh, Haryana. The girl was admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Center in Delhi in critical condition, where doctors said that her fall from the balcony caused severe brain damage. On the morning of November 11, the child was declared brain-dead.
Donated kidney given to 17-yr-old patient, liver to 6-yr-old child
After this, at the behest of the doctors, the child’s father decided to get her organs donated. Mahira’s liver was donated to a 6-year-old child. Doctors at Delhi’s ILBS performed a successful liver transplant. At the same time, both the kidneys of the girl were transplanted to a 17-year-old patient in AIIMS. Doctors said that the baby’s cornea and heart valve have been preserved for later use.
Third girl child to donate organ in Delhi-NCR
Professor, Department of Neurology at AIIMS, Dr Deepak Gupta said that Mahira is the third child to donate an organ at the AIIMS Trauma Center in the last six months. Earlier, Roli and 18-month-old Rishant had donated their organs. Doctors said that when Roli’s case was explained to Mahira’s father, he understood the importance and concept of medically brain dead people and decided to donate his daughter’s organs to save the lives of others. Dr Gupta also laid emphasis on the need to educate parents about the dangers of children falling from heights.
