Legendary musician AR Rahman will turn a year older on January 6. Also known as The Mozart Of Madras, Rahman has been honoured with several prestigious accolades including Grammy, an Oscar, a Golden Globe award, a BAFTA award, sixteen Filmfare Awards South, and fifteen Filmfare Awards.
Born as Allah Rakha Rahman, the musician’s mother used to give instruments on rent to earn a living.
Apart from this Rahman has also been awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award, by the Government of India in 2010. He has predominantly worked in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and English films.
AR Rahman started his career with Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film Roja. He both crooned and composed songs for the film. His notable works include the music in films like Bombay, Thiruda Thiruda, Kadhalan, Gentleman, Slumdog Millionaire, Couples Retreat, Rockstar, Dil Bechara, Atrangi Re, and others.
Besides his singing career, AR Rahman is also a philanthropist and a humanitarian. He was honoured by Standford University for his contributions to global music in 2006 and in 2008 he received Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rotary Club of Madras. In 2014, he has also received an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music.
