Bhagwani Devi Dagar, the 94-year-old athlete, bagged three medals at the World Masters Athletics Championships 2022. Dagar won one gold and two bronze medals in Finland on Sunday.
Dagar won the gold medal in the 100-meter race with a time of 24.74 seconds and two bronze medals in the Shot Put game. Social media is celebrating her win and celebrities including Kangana Ranaut hailed Dagar.
Who is Bhagwani Devi Dagar?
Hailing from Khidka village in Haryana, Bhagwani Devi is a nonagenarian athlete. Earlier, Devi won three gold medals at the National Masters Athletics Championships that took place in Chennai. Therefore, she met all the requirements to compete for India in the World Masters Athletics Championships.
Devi had also won three gold medals in the 100-meter dash, shot put, and javelin throw at the Delhi State Athletics Championship.
For those who don’t know, the World Masters Championships are organised by the World Masters Athletics WMA, formerly known as the World Association of Veteran Athletes. This is a governing body of athletes above the age of 35.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports took to Twitter and congratulated Bhagwani Devi for her accomplishment. They wrote that the effort was commendable, noting that age is no bar.
