Bilkis Bano on Wednesday sought the intervention of the Supreme Court by challenging the premature release given to 11 convicts, who were involved in her gang rape and the murder of her family member during the 2002 Gujarat Riots. Earlier in August, the Gujarat government released the 11 convicts under the 1992 Remission Policy by citing the completion of 14 years in prison and good behavior.
Bilkis Bano’s legal aid has filed a review plea against the release of the 11 convicts who were convicted for her gang rape and the murder of her child. Bilkis’s legal aid had presented the matter before the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud for listing. After hearing about the matter, Chief Justice Chandrachud stated that he will asses if both pleas can be clubbed together and if the same bench can preside over both matters.
Gujarat Government affidavit
BJP-ruled Gujarat Government gave a nod to all the 11 convicts under the 1992 remission police on August 10. The Gujarat Government in their affidavit stated that the government has taken into account all the opinions and have come to the decision to release 11 prisoners by citing that they have completed 14 years and above in jail and also observed the behavior of the convicts was good throughout their serving time.

The convicts were freed on Independence day by the Gujarat Government under the remission policy. The decision by the Gujarat government sparked a row across India and even party lines as many scholars and political leaders came forward to slam the decision taken by the ruling BJP party.
Congress promise for Bilkis Bano
The Congress party in their manifesto for the Gujarat assembly poles has also promised to deliver justice to Bilkis Bano and retract the release of the accused. The promise by the grand old party’s MP and former President Rahul Gandhi had slammed the Narendra Modi government for their decision in the case of Bilkis Bano convicts release.
