Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum is likely to step down from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head role at the end of the current season of the Indian Premier League. At the end of the IPL 2022, he would be stepping down as KKR head coach to take over England’s Test head coach’s job.

McCullum, who was part of KKR in the inaugural season of the IPL in 2008, had informed the KKR players about the recent development during a team meeting.

Several reports suggested that the legendary cricketer is believed to have agreed with the England Cricketer Board and the announcement is expected to happen shortly. Several reports have also claimed that 40-year-old McCullum had expressed his interest in the job.

Brendon McCullum has emerged as a surprise contender for the vacant role as England’s Test coach following two days of interviews at Lord’s. He played a pivotal role in New Zealand’s overall growth in all formats and is a right fit for the vacant role at the ECB.

The ECB had recently named all-rounder Ben Stokes as the red-ball captain and is looking forward to Chris Silverwood’s replacement as the ECB Managing Director Rob Key was keen on splitting the coach duties between the red-ball and white-ball formats.

He has played his last international match in Christchurch in February 2016 against Australia. He has retired from all forms of cricket scoring the fastest Test century (54 balls) and finished his career with 6,453 runs, 12 tons and 31 half-centuries.

McCullum had also smashed the swashbuckling 158 runs in the first-ever IPL match.
