Congress plans to gherao PM residence, Delhi Police denies permission
Raising the issues of inflation, GST hike and unemployment, the Congress party is staging a nationwide protest today. Senior Congress leaders have been gathered outside the party headquarter in New Delhi. The leaders wanted to stage a protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence but the Delhi Police has denied permission for the same.
The Congress party released an official statement on Friday and said that the Congress Working Committee (CWC) members will take part in PM residence gherao while Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs will hold a ‘Chalo Rashtrapati Bhavan’ from Parliament.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said people have witnessed the death of democracy. What India has built brick by brick, starting almost a century ago, was being destroyed in front of his eyes. Anybody who stood against this idea of the onset of dictatorship was viciously attacked, jailed, arrested and beaten up.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh slammed the Modi government for a GST hike on the necessary public goods. He said that people were unemployed and their income was decreasing. But the Modi government was imposing GST on those goods too, which were necessary for the public.
The state administration has imposed prohibitory orders banning large gatherings in parts of Delhi ahead of the congress march. The police also issued an advisory saying that the traffic movement will be in parts of Lutyens’ Delhi.
The traffic police said that special arrangements were made and diversion will be suggested as per expected spots of congestion on major roads.
The Congress protest has come at the time when the Enforcement Directorate is questioning Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case.
