The international federation of association Football (FIFA) has come forth with a decision to suspend the All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Tuesday. The decision carried out by the organization of the FIFA council was passed out without any opposition. An official statement released by FIFA wrote that the step of suspension was triggered due to unwarranted influence from third parties, which is a serious violation of the FIFA Statutes, inside the working of All India Football Federation.
The suspension of AIFF by FIFA will have ramification on the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022 which initially were to be hosted by India from October 11 to 30th. In light of the ban, the hosting rights have been retracted from India by the FIFA committee.
The body added that the enforced ban will be withdrawn once the AIFF administration reclaims its full control over the AIFF’s daily affairs from the three-member committee which was appointed by the supreme court of India recently.
The ban has come in light prior to the Supreme Court’s decision made in May, where it decided to disband the AIFF and appoint a three-member committee, amend the body’s constitution, and carry out elections for the AIFF which had been on hold for 18 months
FIFA, in their release, further informed that they have been in transparent and constructive contact with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in India and are hoping to witness a positive outcome to the case that can still be achieved.
As the news of suspension over the AIFF surfaced, the Indian football former skipper and legend, Bhaichung Bhutia has come forward to show his anguish over the decision made by FIFAn but has also urged the government to seek changes in the system and come together to strive for the betterment of the sport.
The FIFA statutes expect all sports bodies to be free from any legal and political interference. The FIFA committee had instated similar measures in other national associations that had similar cases.
