Former Punjab Assembly Speaker, senior SAD leader Nirmal Singh Kahlon dies at 79
Former speaker and Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Nirmal Singh Kahlon passes away at the age of 79 on July 15, at midnight. Nirmal Singh Kahlon had been ill for a long time and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Amritsar. SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal has expressed grief over his demise. Kahlon’s son has informed us that his last rites will be performed on Sunday.
Sukhbir Singh Badal tweeted, ‘Deeply saddened to learn about the demise of senior Akali leader & former Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker S Nirmal Singh Ji Kahlon. Kahlon Sahab was a source of inspiration for all of us. His wise counsel will always be missed. I stand with Kahlon family in this hour of grief.’
According to the reports, Nirmal Singh Kahlon was ill for a long time. He took his last breath on Friday night around 2:00 pm, in a private hospital, in Amritsar. His son, Ravi Karan Singh has informed that the last rites of his father Nirmal Singh Kahlon will be performed on Sunday, in his village Dadujod.
Moreover, Nirmal Singh Kahlon has been contesting MLA elections from the Fatehgarh Churian seat. He was the Minister of State for Rural Development and Panchayats of Punjab from 1997 to 2002.
He was the speaker of the Punjab Legislative Assembly from 2007 to 2012. He was accused in a case related to the recruitment scam but was later acquitted by the court.
