Former congress student wing leader, Soumyadipta Roy, on Twitter, uploaded a picture of the goddess Durga idol in which Mahishasura’s statue is replaced with an alleged Mahatma Gandhi statue. The Congress leader wrote that the Durga Puja which was organized by the Hindu Mahasabha in Kolkata’s Ruby Park had a goddess Durga idol in which demon Mahishasura’s representation was done with Mahatma Gandhi.

The leader also sought the Police to take stringent actions and arrest the organizers and charge them under the Sedition act, implying how portraying the demon Mahishasura as Mahatama Gandhi is a treacherous act in itself as Mahatma Gandhi was one of the pivotal leaders in the fight for freedom against the British monarch.

The president of West Bengal’s All India Hindu Mahasabha, Chandrachur Goswami, who organized the event, while talking to the press opined that the organization sees Gandhi as the demon Mahishasura, and hence the organization made the idol like that. Mahishasura was killed by goddess Durga and is a mythological representation of good triumph over evil.

Goswami also remarked in his statement that the Central government is promoting Mahatma Gandhi and that’s why the organization was strong-handed in removing the idol which depicts Gandhi in a bad light. He further added that he wants to remove Mahatama Gandhi from everywhere and promote leaders like Netaji Subash Chandra Bose and others to the front.

Before Soumyadipta Roy’s tweet, journalist Indradeep Bhattacharya had uploaded the Tweet informing about the Mahatma Gandhi depiction as mahishasura idol of goddess Durga installed at the Durga Puja. However, he had to take the Tweet down as he was asked by the administration due to the Tweet causing tension during the festivities.

The action by West Bengal’s Hindu Mahasabha faced ramifications as the police filed a complaint against the organization and also asked the organizers to remove the idol. Chandrachur Goswami initially cited that the depiction of Mahishasura as Mahatma Gandhi was merely co-incidental and added that they abided by the police’s instruction and have added changes to the idol.

The move by Hindu Mahasabha came under scrutiny as many across Party lines including BJP condemned the incident. The ruling party of West Bengal, Trinamool Congress, also added to the condemnation as the spokesperson of the party stated that this is an insult to the father of the nation and further remarked that everyone knows the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi was affiliated to which ideology, insinuating and targeting the BJP.

However, the BJP has separated itself from the incident as Sukanta Majumdar, BJP state president, came forward and said clarified that the party condemns such moves and added that the representation of Mahatma Gandhi is distasteful.
