A blood-curdling story has come to light from Karnataka’s Mulbagal where a Dalit Youth turned to suicide on Wednesday after facing harassment and beating of upper-class men over a trivial spat of overtaking anther bike. The Dalit youth was identified as Uday Kiran, after which the Nangali police filed a case.
According to reports, the Kiran, along with his friend Nagaraju were traveling on bike and over took Raju and Gopalakrina’s motorcycle who were enraged by the act and stopped the Kiran’s vehicle and assaulted him.
The reports also claimed that Uday Kiran and his friend faced a similar predicament while returning home as they were stopped by the same men and brutally beaten by them. The accused reportedly snatched their Uday’s and his friend’s phone and vehicle and harassed them.
Later, Uday approached the accused to fetch his belongings back after which the accused tied him to the tree and at the Racchekatte area. The accused then brutally beat up the youth and hurled abuses at him as well.
Uday, frustrated by the discrimination and harassment inflicted on him by the higher-caste men, turned to suicide and hung himself from a nearby tree around his home.
The police registered a case against Raju, Shivaraj, Gopalakrishnappa, and Munivenkatappa who are all residents of Pethandlahalli in Mulbagal. The charges filed against the accused also include Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. It is also reported that the accused are at large and the police are investigating and trying to nab them soon.
Another incident of a similar nature came to light from Karnataka’s Heggotara Village where a woman who drank water from a water tank was emptied out and purified with cow urine by the upper caste men of the area. The reports also claim that the upper caste men also criticised the woman for drinking water.
