A transgender couple from Kerala’s Kozhikode, Ziya and Zahad, are expecting their first baby in March. Ziya took to her Instagram handle to share the news of Zahad’s pregnancy, claiming that it is the first case in India that a transman has conceived.

She shared a series of adorable photos where Ziya is showing her belly. In a caption, she wrote, Though she was not a woman by birth or by her body, she had the feminine dream inside her to hear a baby calling her mother. Like her dream of becoming a mother, he (Zahad) has a dream of becoming a father, and today, with his full consent, an eight-month-old life is moving in his belly, she added.

The couple has been living together for the past three years. Ziya Paval (21) was born a man and changed into a woman and Zahad (23) was born a woman and transformed into a man. Zahad, an accountant by profession, conceived the baby from Ziya, a classical dance teacher, amid his transition process from a woman into a man, which was stopped for the baby and his uterus and some other organs were not removed.

According to the reports, the couple earlier decided to go for adoption. But being a transgender couple, the legal proceedings were challenging for them.

Zahad’s choice to have a baby was made after her breasts had already been removed, but the doctors said it was possible because she still had a uterus. The trans-couple has decided that the baby will get breast milk from the milk bank.

Although both of them were undergoing gender transition, a team of experts from Kozhikode Medical College confirmed that there was no medical difficulty in conceiving.
