Messi once again played a crucial role for his country throughout the competition. Messi finally captured the prize that had eluded him for so long during his stellar career while competing in his final World Cup.

After Argentina’s victory, cameras caught Messi and his mother Celia Maria Cuccittini sharing a touching moment. When Messi’s mother arrived on the field, it was captured on camera that the 35-year-old spun around and joyfully embraced her.

After Kylian Mbappe’s hat-trick ensured that the game ended equal at 3-3 after extra time, Argentina prevailed 4-2 in the shootout. Argentina won the World Cup for the third time thanks to Gonzalo Montiel’s game-winning penalty, depriving France of the opportunity to win the championship for the first time in 60 years.

In the shootout, Messi and Mbappe each scored a goal, but Kingsley Coman’s next French attempt was saved, and Aurelien Tchouameni’s subsequent attempt was wide. France lost the World Cup final on penalties for the second time in five tournaments, the first time coming in 2006 against Italy.

With the victory, Messi was able to emulate the legendary Diego Maradona and cap off his illustrious career at age 35. Maradona was a significant contributor to Argentina’s previous World Cup victory, which happened in 1986.
