A middle-aged woman, along with her teenage son and minor daughter, committed suicide by jumping in front of a train in Narsinghpur district of Madhya Pradesh, to reportedly escape her abusive and alcoholic husband, police said on Saturday.

An official said that a 38-year-old woman, along with her 19-year-old son and 16-year-old daughter jumped in front of a moving train near the Gadarwara railway station. At around 10 pm on Friday night, police received information that the bodies of the three deceased were lying on the tracks near Gadarwara, he said.

The official said a police team dispatched to the spot took custody of the three bodies and also found a suicide inside one of the victim’s pockets which revealed that the trio were ending their lives because they were fed up with the behavior of their father who was abusive and often inebriated.

He said that a case of abetment to suicide under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the father who has been taken into custody and will be produced in court, adding that further investigation is underway.

In related news, a 16-year-old girl and her 21-year-old boyfriend reportedly committed suicide by jumping off a hill in Samta Nagar area of Mumbai, officials said on Saturday.

A senior official of the Mumbai Police said that the deceased couple were neigbours who lived in Kandivali East Janupada area. The man—identified as Akash Jhate (21) worked as a housekeeper, while the girl, 16, who was a student—had fallen in love and wanted to get married.

However, their families opposed the match, leading to the couple taking such a drastic measure, he said.

According to an official statement by the Mumbai Police, a call was received from Janupada Mine in Samta Nagar police station at around 12:30 pm on Friday afternoon informing that two bodies were lying there.

A team of officers of Samta Nagar police reached the scene of the incident to take stock of the incident and recovered the bodies of the couple, the statement said, adding that the bodies were sent for post-mortem examination.
