Mamata Banerjee dismisses alliance with Left-Congress against BJP, says will fight alone in 2024
The Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has come out to announce that her party won’t be allying with anyone and will fight the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections alone. The statement by the Trinamool leader comes as a big blow to opposition unity, especially with the Congress which was pushing for greater opposition convergence against the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections due next year.
The announcement by Banerjee comes in the wake of her party losing the by-election in Bengal’s Sagardighi seat to Congress. She also accused the CPM and Congress to be the same as BJP and added that a vote for Congress and CPM is synonymous with a vote for BJP.
Referring to the bypoll result in Sagardihi, she said the truth has come out and further added that the bypoll was a teaching moment for the people that the people can’t trust Congress or CPM. She further termed the BJP, Left, and Congress to have an understanding among themselves and called them to be an immoral alliance due to the transfer of votes.
She further added and accused the Congress, Left, and the BJP have all played communal cards in Sagardighi. She then said that the Trinamool Congress will fight the 2024 Lok Sabha elections with the alliance of the people and no political party.
She further said that those people who want to vote out BJP will vote for Trinamool and further suggested BJP will face the same fate which they did in the Bengal assembly elections.
The statements by the Trinamool chief is a setback to the Congress and other like-minded parties who had been pushing for a grand alliance of Opposition parties to unseat the Government. Most recently, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge in the Congress plenary session suggested that the party is ready to make sacrifices in order to achieve the goal of a grand alliance.
Now, the ball is in the Congress court to follow through and be true to its words. Other opposition parties have also pushed for a grand alliance and opposition Unity.
Kharge had also staked a claim that the Congress will lead the grand Opposition, however, with a tussle brewing, the much-sought after consensus looks fleeting.
