The show, scheduled to take place at Dr SPM Civic Centre, Kedarnath Sahni Auditorium, from 2 pm to 9:30 pm, was cancelled after the VHP leader blamed the comedian for mocking Hindu gods in his show. Munawar Faruqui hosted a comedy show in Hyderabad last Saturday amidst tight security when Telangana BJP chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar had given a call to boycott the show for mocking Hindu gods.

T Raja Singh, the leader of the Telangana BJP, who is currently suspended, threatened to burn down the venue if Munawar Faruqui was permitted to perform in Hyderabad prior to his concert on August 20. Raja Singh and a few other Hyderabad-based BJP members were briefly detained on Friday night.

A day later, on August 21, Raja Singh uploaded a video on YouTube in which he made some disparaging remarks about the Mohammad Prophet, sparking demonstrations in Hyderabad.

Amidst this, Trinamool Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra called the Delhi Police spineless for cancelling Munawar Faruqui’s show. Invoking Mahatma Gandhi and the 75 years of India’s independence, the Lok Sabha MP tweeted, Gandhiji said, ‘I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. Is India@75’s communal harmony so fragile today that it is disrupted by comedy show?’

The city police in Bengaluru had called off Faruqui’s show after learning that the event’s organisers had not obtained prior approval to hold it.
