Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday said that the state government is fulfilling its guarantee of providing free electricity for up to 300 units to each household every month. The CM said that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has set a new example in the state. Amid the power crisis in Punjab in the recent past, the government is ready to give 300 units of free electricity to each household from July 1.

In a tweet, Bhagwant Mann wrote, ‘Previous governments used to make promises during elections. Five years would pass by the time promises were fulfilled, but our government has taken a new turn and set a new example in the history of Punjab. Today we are going to fulfill another guarantee made with the Punjabis. From today, each family across Punjab will get 300 units of electricity every month for free, he tweeted.

Giving 300 units of electricity for free to each household was one of the key poll promises made by the AAP during the 2022 Punjab assembly elections. Raghav Chadha, AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP, said that after Delhi, Punjab has become the second state to give free electricity to its people and called the day historic.

Chadha tweeted, ‘Today is a historic day as Punjab becomes the second state after Delhi to get lifeline electricity free of cost. ‘Kejriwal di pehli guarantee’ to Punjabis becomes a reality.’

State Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema stated that the free power supply would bring an additional cost of Rs 1,800 crore to the state exchequer when he presented the AAP government’s first budget for Punjab on June 27.

He added that the state government intended to support this plan by reducing unnecessary expenditure and increasing its own tax collection. The step of giving free electricity up to 300 units will greatly benefit the Punjabis who are struggling with skyrocketing power bills.
