R Krishnakumar, a Tata Group veteran and former Tata Sons director, passed away on January 1, Sunday. Kerala-born Krishnakumar died due to a cardiac arrest at 6 pm in his Mumbai residence.

The 84-year-old was also a trustee of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, which together hold a 66 percent stake in Tata Sons. The Padma Shri awardee had also served multiple positions in the group, including heading its hospitality arm Indian Hotels.

Tata Sons’ current chairman N Chandrasekaran expressed grief on the demise of R Krishnakumar, a close confidante of Ratan Tata. Chandrasekaran in a statement said that he had the good fortune of knowing him and what stood out was his deep sense of compassion as a human being. He always wanted to help the less privileged and positively impact their lives. We pray for his departed soul and will sorely miss him, he added.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also offered condolences to the family of the former Tata Sons director. He tweeted, deeply saddened to hear the passing of Padma Shri R.K. Krishnakumar, former Tata Sons director and Tata Companies veteran. Born in Thalassery, he was vital to many pivotal moves by the group, including strengthening ties with Kerala. Heartfelt condolences to family and friends, he tweeted.

After leaving managerial positions, Krishnakumar continued to be involved with the Tata Trusts. He is said to have been a member of the team that assisted Ratan Tata in the Cyrus Mistry ouster incident.
