Veteran actor Sameer Khakhar, popular as Khopdi from Nukkad, dies due to multiple organ failure
Noted veteran actor Sameer Khakhar, who was best known as Khopdi from the TV show Nukkad, succumbed to multiple organ failure on Wednesday. He was 71.
Reports said Khakhar also suffered from urinary and respiratory issues. He was admitted to MM Hospital in Mumbai’s Borivali and his funeral will take place at Babhai naka crematorium. The news of his passing away was confirmed by his younger brother Ganesh Khakhar.
In an interview with ETimes, Ganesh Khakhar opened up about the actor’s health and said he went to sleep and was unconscious following which they called the doctor who advised them to admit him immediately. Ganesh Khakhar also informed that the actor was put on the ventilator and he collapsed gradually at 4:30 am on Wednesday morning.
Filmmaker Hansal Mehta took to Twitter and paid a heartfelt tribute to Sameer Khakhar. In a tweet, Mehta wrote that for some reason he was nicknamed Khopdi in college after Khakhar’s iconic character Nukkad and his closest friends from the time still call him Khopdi. He further thanked the deceased actor for the memories.

Sameer Khakhar was popular for his roles in Nukkad and Shrimaan Shrimati. He also featured in multiple Bollywood films including Hasee Toh Phasee starring Parineeti Chopra and Sidharth Malhotra, Salman Khan’s Jai ho, Vikas Bahl’s web series Sunflower, Sudhir Mishra’s Serious Men, and Salman Khan’s Jai Ho.
Khakhar’s most memorable film role is considered to be the dialogue-free Pushpaka Vimana in 1987. He played an alcoholic businessman who was abducted by the hero of the film, Kamal Haasan.
Last week, another noted actor Satish Kaushik passed away after suffering a heart attack. The actor was last spotted at Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi’s Holi bash in Mumbai. Following his death, Kaushik’s wife alleged that he was murdered for Rs 15 crore.
