Shaheen Bagh bulldozer: Delhi Police reaches anti-CAA protest site to provide security to South Delhi Municipal Corporation
Amid tension and high voltage drama over bulldozers at Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh, the Delhi Police on Monday reached at the symbolic anti-CAA protest site to provide security to the BJP-controlled South Delhi Municipal Corporation that was ready to demolish the area.
Delhi Police is providing security to the SDMC for the demolition drive in the Shaheen Bagh area, the Deputy commissioner of police (South-East) Esha Pandey told the media.
Due to insufficient staff, the Delhi Police had earlier denied the SDMC request to provide security but after the civic body approached senior Delhi Police officials South-East District police decided to send their personnel.
The encroachment process was halted soon after it began today after the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) MLA Amanatullah Khan reached and intervened in the process.
However, the teams of Delhi Police and MCD officials are still in Shaheen Bagh along with bulldozers for the demolition drive but the locals were seen sitting on roads to stop the bulldozers that were brought for the demolition drive.
Joining the protest, the AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan said there were no encroachments in the area and bulldozers were brought only to indulge in politics. He had got all illegal structures in the area removed and there are none now, he also said. He also spoke to representatives of the local market association in the presence of police and got a temporary structure removed. The bulldozers returned soon after.
After witnessing the bulldozers in the area, the owners of some shops, where bulldozers were headed, were seen removing the scaffoldings for construction voluntarily.
After running bulldozers in violence-hit Jahangirpuri, the SDMC razed over half a dozen shops in Tughlakabad earlier this month.
