TN Budget 2022: Finance Minister Palanivel Thiagarajan begins budget speech, AIADMK stages walkout

Tamil Nadu’s main opposition party AIADMK staged a walkout on Friday as Finance Minister PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan began his Budget speech for 2022-23. It is the first full-fledged state budget since the DMK government headed by Chief Minister MK Stalin assumed office in May last year.

The AIADMK and other Opposition MLAs began raising slogans and protesting when Thiagarajan began his speech. Then he stopped his speech for Speaker Appavu to attempt to calm down the AIADMK MLAs.

The Opposition sought the Speaker’s permission to allow them to convey the party’s opinion to the House. The Speaker then refused to entertain MLAs and said he doesn’t want to raise other issues on the day of the Budget.

In his budget speech, Thiagarajan said despite the financial constraints the state is facing, the DMK government had been fulfilling promises since day one. The Dravidian ethos and philosophies will be the principles of DMK government. He said he will be firm in trying to achieve social justice on all fronts, the Finance Minister said.

Yesterday, the finance minister had assured the people of the state in his tweet saying that the results of MK Stalin’s 10 months of work can be seen in tomorrow’s budget. Reiterating his confidence, he wrote in his tweet that the budget would be a significant work in the annals of Tamil Nadu’s history.
