Wimbledon 2022: Serena and Venus Williams names missing from the entry list, Here's why
The elite sister duo, Serena and Venus Williams will not be featuring in the Wimbledon Women Single’s. Both their names were missing from the entry list of Wimbledon. Another surprising fact is that, apart from the William sisters, Roger Federer’s name was also missing from the entry list.
However, there’s a possibility that either of them can request for a wild-card entry in the Grand Slam tournament. Wimbledon 2022 will begin from June 27. Apart from Serena and Venus, Leylah Fernandez’s name is also missing from the entry list. Leylah was the US Open 2021 runner-up. Unfortunately, she had injured her right foot making her miss out the French Open this week.
Making a record, Serena William has won seven Open era and record 23 major singles championships at the All-England Club. The most recently one was in 2016. The 40-year-old American athlete was also the runner-up there in 2018 and 2019. After injuring her right leg. Hence, she was asked to discontinue playing in the first-round match, last year.
On the other hand, Venus is a five-time singles champion at Wimbledon. She also has seven major singles trophies in total. Venus William played won the latest match on tour came at Chicago, last August at the age of 41.
Considering the age and injuries, the missing names of William sisters from the Wimbledon entry list does not comes as a shock. But to their fans, this was indeed a sad moment. Seeing your childhood heroes and heroines becoming old and tired can be disturbing at times. But one need to accept the reality of life and cherish the good work done by them.
However, the reason behind Roger Federer’s name from the entry list is still unknown. For past some time, the star player was dealing with injuries but any official statement has not been generated regarding his health or recovery.
