Xi Jinping becomes China President for third term, first to outlast Deng Xiaoping two-term cap
Xi Jinping on Friday became the President of China for the third time, becoming the first country’s longest-serving leader since founding father Mao Zedong. Xi becomes the first leader to outlive Deng Xiaoping’s two-term cap.
The National People’s Congress (NPC), approved Xi Jinping’s election as president by a margin of almost 3,000 votes.
According to the reports, there was no other candidate in the fray. Xi was also chosen to lead China’s Central Military Commission for a third term. Also, the 2 million-member People’s Liberation Army, which officially obeys party rather than national orders, was unanimously appointed under Xi as its leader.

The National People’s Congress is dominated by the Communist Party and is widely viewed as a rubber-stamp body.
The Communist Party of China elected the 69-year-old to a record-tying third term as general secretary in October. His re-election is a break from tradition as only party founder Mao Zedong had been elected for a third term in the post.
It is significant to note that in 2018, Xi Jinping personally lifted the restriction on the number of presidential terms. Hence, Xi Jinping will be able to continue leading China until his resignation, demise, or removal.
Moreover, Han Zheng was chosen as the new vice president and Zhao Leji was chosen as the next parliament chair by China’s legislature. They both belonged to Xi’s former group of party officials at the Politburo Standing Committee.
