Karnataka: 6 pilgrims killed, 16 injured in road accident visiting Yellamma Devi

At least six people were killed, including three women, and sixteen others were injured after a vehicle carrying pilgrims rammed into a banyan tree in Karnataka’s Belagavi district. The accident took place in the wee hours of Thursday near the Chunchanura district.

According to the reports, 23 pilgrims were travelling in a Bolero vehicle from Hulkund village in Ramdurg Taluk to Renuka Yellamma Devi temple at Savadatti. The accident occurred when the bus turned turtle after the driver lost control and hit a banyan tree before toppling.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjeev Patil rushed to the spot after receiving information about the accident. Five of them died on the spot while another died on the way to the hospital. The deceased are identified as Hanumavva (25), Deepa (31), Savitha (17), Supreetha (11), Indiravva (24) and Maruthi (42). The injured have been shifted to a nearby hospital.

The police said the deceased were going towards the temple when, in the middle of their journey, the vehicle driver insisted on giving them a lift. The accident happened five minutes after they boarded the bus.

Minister for Water Resources and District In-Charge Govinda Karajol has announced Rs 5 lakh compensation to the kin of the victims. He also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. Katakola police have taken up the investigation of the case.
