Karnataka: First case of Zika virus detected, 5-year-old girl infected, alert issued
There has been a stir in the state after the first case of Zika virus came to light in Karnataka on Tuesday. After the confirmation of the Zika virus infection in a 5-year-old girl here. State Health Minister K Sudhakar has informed that the state health officials have been advised to remain alert and take immediate precautionary measures if new cases are found. Health Minister K Sudhakar said that this was the first case of Zika virus in the state and that the government was monitoring the situation carefully.
Minister K Sudhakar also said that the government was taking the matter seriously. Guidelines will be issued soon for the people. Health Minister Sudhakar said that a few months ago cases of Zika virus were found in Kerala, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, now the fresh case has been reported in Karnataka for the first time.
67-year-old man infected in Pune
It is noteworthy that in the beginning of December, according to the health department, a 67-year-old man was found infected with Zika virus in Pune’s Bavdhan area. This infected person is a resident of Nashik and had come to Pune on 6 November. This patient came to the hospital in the month of November after having symptoms like fever, cough, joint pain and fatigue and the investigation confirmed Zika infection. The Maharashtra Health Department had then said that this was the first case of Zika infection in the state.

According to health experts, Zika virus infection is spread by the bite of Aedes mosquito. According to the World Health Organisation, the virus was first identified in Uganda in 1947. Early symptoms of Zika virus include high fever, joint pain, muscle pain, headache and vomiting.
